Rissho Kosei-kai is a Buddhist organization composed of ordinary men and women who have faith in the Buddha and strive to enrich their spirituality by applying his teachings in their daily lives. At both the local community and international levels, they are very active in promoting peace and well-being through altruistic activities and cooperation with other organizations. With headquarters in Tokyo, Rissho Kosei-kai now has some 2.05 million member households in 245 churches throughout Japan as well as in other countries.

The organization was founded by the late Nikkyo Niwano and Myoko Naganuma in 1938, guided by the teachings of the Lotus Sutra in which the innermost spirit of Shakyamuni Buddha is incorporated. In 1991, Rev. Nichiko Niwano succeeded his father as president. Under his continuing leadership, members have been active in sharing the Buddha's compassion in their communities, their places of work, and also at the international level.

Two of the main characteristics of Rissho Kosei-kai are the following:

  1. Rissho Kosei-kai is a Buddhist organization in direct line of descent from Shakyamuni Buddha. Rev. Nikkyo Niwano discerned the principle of peace and liberation and established Rissho Kosei-kai on that basis.

  2. Rissho Kosei-kai emphasizes the practical application of buddhist teachings. Members of Rissho Kosei-kai, with faith in the Buddha, apply his teachings in their daily lives. They recite the sutra mornings and evenings, strive to learn the teachings at local churches through hoza counseling sessions and doctrinal lectures, as well as significant events and ceremonies, and guide other people to the faith by sharing the teachings and their experiences.

Our Path:

  1. To develop as bodhisattvas (those who seek Enlightenment both for themselves and others).
  2. To realize Shakyamuni Buddha's message: all beings are on this Path.
  3. To bring peace to our families, communities, countries, and to the world.

This spiritual practice is found in the thoughts, words, and actions of our daily lives. This helps us regain our balance in both our physical and spiritual needs. It teaches us a new perspective that relieves the suffering that occurs during our lifetime, and also to experience the true meaning of the joy of life.

"The reason I have established Rissho Kosei-kai is, the passion to liberate all people from suffering and restore the world. Then I realized, the only way to accomplish this, is to spread the true spirit of Buddhism which is inspired in the Lotus Sutra." [Nikkyo Niwano Dec.1968]

This web site provides resources to learn how the Lotus Sutra can be put into practice, and where our practice centers are located. With headquarters in Tokyo, Rissho Kosei-kai now has over two million member households in over 300 Dharma Centers throughout the world.
