The basic aim of Rissho Kosei-kai is not only to help people purify themselves through Buddhist practice, but to help build peace and prosperity in the home, the community, the nation, and the world. Since politics plays an important role in securing a nation's peace and prosperity, people of religion should be actively involved in politics and the work of legislators.

As a Buddhist organization, Rissho Kosei-kai sometimes takes strong stances on political issues in order to promote social harmony and world peace. Rissho Kosei-kai considers its political activities to be a form of bodhisattva practice and speaks out on political issues to defend freedom of religion and the sanctity of life for the sake of world peace.

Rissho Kosei-kai does not permanently support any one political party since Buddhism teaches that all things are impermanent and interdependent. In the light of this truth, Rissho Kosei-kai supports the parties and politicians that seem right for any given time. However, Rissho Kosei-kai will not form its own political party, and its officers will not seek public office. But it seizes every opportunity to disseminate the true spirit of Buddhism in the political arena.

In Japan, Rissho Kosei-kai conducts research and promotes discussion mainly through its affiliated Chuo Academic Research Institute on issues such as the revision of Japan's religious corporation law, brain death and organ transplants, and the separation of religion and the state, especially with regard to Japanese politicians' visits to Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, which is dedicated to Japanese military personnel who died in the nation's wars since 1853.

Rissho Kosei-kai also publishes a newspaper and various periodicals in its endeavor to promote harmony and social progress by influencing public opinion.
