The Rissho Kosei-kai Donate-a-Meal Fund for Peace supports the following projects undertaken jointly with other religious and nongovernmental organizations with both financial aspects and human resources. 1. The Campaign for Sharing Blankets with People in Africa The origins of this campaign trace back to 1984 and Rissho Kosei-kai participated in it from the time of its founding. A total of 2,776,283 blankets were collected nationwide and distributed to needy people in various African countries by 2000. The fund has been utilized to cover the cost of shipping the blankets to their destination and of publicity activities for the Campaign for Sharing Blankets with People in Africa. 2. Assistance for Reconstruction of the former Yugoslavia The fund actively supports the activities of JEN, Japan's first multiorganizational NGO, which conducts various relief activities including vocational training, income-creating projects, contributions of food and medical equipment, construction of prefabricated housing, and counseling for refugees and displaced persons in the former Yugoslavia.
3. Reforestation Program in Ethiopia The fund supports reforestation in Ethiopia in cooperation with the Relief Society of Tigre (REST), aiming to improve the soil's water-retention capacity and to keep the topsoil from eroding. With the local fighting in the Ethiopian province of Tigre ended, some 80 percent of the area is said to now be covered with greenery. 4. Project for the Preservation of Cambodia's Buddhist Heritage Together with the Shanti Volunteer Association (SVA) and local Buddhist priests in Cambodia, the fund supports the reprinting of Buddhist scriptures in the Khmer language for local Buddhist priests and their lay followers, and the distribution of them. A total of 13,000 copies of Buddhist scriptures have been reprinted and distributed to Buddhist temples and Buddhist schools throughout Cambodia. During the Pol Pot regime in the late 1970s, Cambodia's Buddhist Institute was destroyed and some 40,000 important books and other materials were burned to ashes. Since 1986, the fund has supported the SVA and local Buddhists in reclaiming the country's Buddhist cultural heritage. The institute was rebuilt in May 1998 and the fund also supported the reconstruction.
5. Support for Personnel Training of Members of Japanese Nongovernmental Organizations The fund jointly with the Japanese NGO Center for International Cooperation (JANIC) supports specialized training for people who work in various Japanese NGOs. 6. Support for the Foundation of Bataan Christian Youth In cooperation with the Foundation of Bataan Christian Youth, resources from the fund are used to provide financial assistance for local Filipino students, including scholarships and funding for local vocational schools. |
