Rissho Kosei-kai Celebrates 79th Anniversary

March 2017

On March 5 Rissho Kosei-kai members celebrated their organization's 79th anniversary. The celebration ceremony in the Great Sacred Hall at the organization's headquarters in Tokyo was attended by some 4,000 members and relayed by satellite TV to all Dharma centers throughout Japan and webcast to Dharma centers overseas.
The ceremony opened with offerings performed by 16 young women members at the altar before the image of the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni. President-designate Kosho Niwano led the assembly in sutra recitation and read out a pledge of dedication to the Buddha written by President Nichiko Niwano.

Dr. Gene Reeves, a professor emeritus of Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago and an international advisor to Rissho Kosei-kai, delivered a congratulatory address. He recalled his impressions of Founder Nikkyo Niwano and explained his own reasons for concentrating on the Lotus Sutra and the great principles in which the founder believed.

After that, President Niwano presented letters of thanks and commemorative gifts to two representatives of 217 leaders and 212 other members who had rendered distinguished service to Rissho Kosei-kai Dharma centers and the organization as a whole.
In his Dharma talk, President Niwano referred to the Buddhist worldview of the Mutual Penetration of the Ten Realms (from the hells to buddhahood), that hells arise in a mind dominated by anger but that showing compassion and consideration to all living beings makes the mind a realm of buddhahood. Thus, he emphasized the importance of realizing the sanctity of all life. Furthermore, he said it is important for everyone to be thankful for the gift of life and therefore diligent in helping others find spiritual liberation through the Buddha's teachings.
