Tennessee Professor Lectures on Buddhism at Kosei Library

IBC public lecture on Buddhism by Dr. Miriam LeveringThe International Buddhist Congregation of Rissho Kosei-kai hosted a public lecture on Buddhism by Dr. Miriam Levering, a professor of religious studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and an international advisor to Rissho Kosei-kai, on July 11 at the Kosei Library in Tokyo. The lecture was titled "A Surprisingly Friendly Universe: An Introduction to Buddhism." She addressed an audience of some 30 people, including foreign residents. Explaining that all people possess the buddha-nature, Dr. Levering said the revelation of each person's individual buddha-nature would make the world a surprisingly friendly place to live in. Mentioning briefly the Parable of the Burning House in chapter 3 of the Lotus Sutra and the Parable of the Poor Son in chapter 4, she underlined the importance of trying to see things from other people's points of view and sharing the teachings with them, through the daily practice of meeting people with warmheartedness.
