Faith and Practice

Buddhism, not in the philosophical or academic sense but in the religious sense, is based on personal faith in the Three Treasures: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, or the community of believers. With that belief deep in their hearts and minds, Rissho Kosei-kai members practice their religious activities--sutra recitations, hoza sessions, guidance of others to the faith, and celebrating memorial days and events--and render altruistic service to the needy through activities dedicated to peace. All these elements and aspects in which members are involved are simply stated in the Members' Vow given below, which Rissho Kosei-kai members recite at the time of every prayer and gathering, and at every religious devotion each morning and evening.

We, members of Rissho Kosei-kai,
Take refuge in the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni,
And recognize in Buddhism the true way of salvation,
Under the guidance of our revered founder, Nikkyo Niwano.
In the spirit of lay Buddhists,
We vow to perfect ourselves
Through personal discipline and leading others
And by improving our knowledge and practice of the faith,
And we pledge ourselves to follow the bodhisattva way
To bring peace to our families, communities, and countries and to the world.
