President Niwano’s comment during the prayer service on March 15
for victims of the earthquake in northeastern Japan

Good morning, everyone.

As Chair Watanabe has just said now, I think the words “extraordinary” or “tremendous” are the kind of language that we are justified in using in such a time and situation.

Now, as he has just mentioned, we should keep in mind the need for sympathy and compassion, and we should singlemindedly go forward with the best possible cooperation among us.

We are given a mission by the Eternal Buddha. I wish and pray that we each will do our best to carry out the work of Kannon Bodhisattva.

Moreover, in this new and grave situation, we must think about how to lead simpler lives; in other words, we should reflect on the many things we have wasted.

Thus, in daily life, as we strive to live more simply, we would like to cooperate with others in a truly wholehearted way.

Thank you.
