Public seminars on family education were held at the Los Angeles Dharma Center on May 18 and at the Denver Montclair International School, in Denver, Colorado, on May 20.

The Los Angeles seminar's theme was "How to praise or scold children to develop their humanity." Forty people attended. The Denver seminar's theme was "Parent-child education deepens our compassion." Sixty people attended. Most of the participants at both seminars were Japanese and nonmembers of Rissho Kosei-kai.

At both seminars, Rev. Takayo Maruyama, head of the Tokyo Research Institute for Family Education, said parents should not scold their children emotionally but bring them up with compassion.

She also explained that parents should especially treat their children with compassion when they are at a rebellious age and not obeying their parents.

After the seminar in Denver seven people received personal counseling. Some of them talked about differences in childrearing values between husbands born and raised in America and wives born and raised in Japan.

In a question-and-answer session in Denver, one participant asked if relationships between parents and children should be the same as between husbands and wives, and between parents and other people. The participants learned that family education forms the basis of all human relationships.
