Rissho Kosei-kai Volunteers Do Relief Work in Miyagi Prefecture
Members of Rissho Kosei-kai from across the country gathered in Miyagi Prefecture, which was hit hard by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, to do volunteer work for the relief of disaster victims.
The project began March 30. The first groups of volunteers, from Niigata and North Kanto, worked until April 17. After that, volunteers from the rest of Japan came to Miyagi. From April 17 to May 2, 164 volunteers registered at volunteer centers in the cities of Higashi Matsushima and Tagajo. More volunteers were expected after that, until the project ends on May 29. Volunteers stayed at the Sendai Dharma Center for three nights, and worked for four days on such undertakings as removing sludge from within and around houses and helping residents of damaged houses remove their belongings. Volunteers also helped members of the Ishinomaki Dharma Center remove soaked and broken furniture from houses damaged by the tsunami and removed dirt under floors.
